NSA whistleblower, Thomas Drake decided to accept a plea deal that would have him plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge of sharing “classified” NSA information to the media, a far cry from the ridiculous felony charge of violating the Espionage Act. This means that the Justice Departments efforts to set an example of Drake for daring to blow the whistle that would embarrass NSA management fell apart. The government’s efforts in this case to “kill the messenger” sent a chilling message to any would be whistleblowers they had better not take that road. It also revealed the difficult path a whistleblower can take to rectify a serious problem.
